Creation Myth #005, "Sometimes My Spirit Gets Under My Skin"
This painting is a part of Anka Yanovna's 'Creation Myth' series, an exploration of womanhood, pop culture and mythology through the lens of a scifi apocalypse.
Original artwork hand painted on a base of hand hammered metal. The .032 aluminum was hand cut and hammered to form a curved square that extends from your wall in a gentle arc. Fascinating to look at from multiple angles, piece is ready to hang and does not require a frame
A blue figure with deep red shading looks to our right as they pull their torso open to reveal rainbow static, where a second set of hands pulls open another layer, do they continue to infinity? Their hair descends in waves to the bottom of the piece, ranging in shade from bright grass green to black shadow, sprinkled with tiny stars. A fluorescent green wash was used on the hair, and a neon yellow glow is cast on the top of the head from the swirling double halo above. The background is a surreal fantasy landscape, covered in elements reminiscent of macroscopic pollen and bacterium. The entire earthscape and sky are dramatically curved from the figure in an arc, the clouds in the sky tightening into smaller curves around the head. Fluorescent red overlay on the cloud highlights make them appear to glow.
This painting was created through the patient building of layers upon layers of acrylic paint to create depth and saturation. The colors truly have a life of their own, and even in low light the piece is vivid and shines with jewel-like intensity. Combined with the unique curving of the aluminum base, this piece has the surreal quality of appearing larger than its actual size when hanging on your wall.
